just take tripod, put your camera towards place were lightnings appear more often, make aperture to be a little more than 5 (but try different - once I did 11 and it was fine) and make expose about from 30 secs up to 2 minutes (that's what I usually do) - and then, make as many shots as you can (last time I made about 100). Then throw away all "empty" and work on the rest
going to publish my collection of lightnings - have 2 most vivid out of 100
good luck and try to catch it but only as nice picture

I always wanted to catch one.. but i never had the chance. I mean... I live in the city and I don't have any nice places to aim at and take a shot.
